Gallery 1936 was established by George Richards in October 2024, a century after the publication of André Breton's Manifeste du Surréalisme. The gallery specialises in British and international Surreal art, and takes its name from the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936, which first united an emerging group of British Surrealists with their more established European contemporaries.
With a curatorial background in museum and university art collections, and having most recently acted as the director of a leading Modern British art gallery, George combines rigorous scholarship with commercial knowledge to source and present exceptional works of art. The gallery works with established collectors, institutional collections, and first-time buyers, tailoring to the specific needs of each accordingly.
The gallery plays an active role in encouraging the reappraisal of lesser-known Surrealists - figures such as John Selby-Bigge, Sam Haile, and Toni del Renzio, who made a telling contribution to the genre in spite of their relative lack of recognition.
