Like many Surrealists, Mellor was strongly influenced by Freudian psychoanalysis, with the notion of desire and the female form becoming central themes in his work during the 1960s. Bird with Falconers Glove, however, signals a departure from this, given the conspicuous absence of any human presence with the floating glove. This painting was the most accomplished work he produced in a series of curious, barbed, bird-like beings from the period, skilfully executed in meticulous detail.
