Hongos en la Noche is believed to be the artist’s only experiment with coloured chalks, and was produced while still a student at the UPR. Granell singled the work out for praise when it was exhibited in Zeno’s graduation show, admiring the dazzling shapes ‘composed of the strangest phosphorescences’ He lauded Zeno’s use of colour, writing that when her pigments “pass from the palette to canvas or paper, (they) undergo an alchemical metamorphosis.”
